The M site and the surrounding tetrahedra at phases 0, ¼, ½ and ¾. The occupancy distribution of the M site among three split sites are indicated by the size (projected area) of the sphere. The tetrahedra are colored yellow and blue for Si- and Al-dominated sites, respectively. It is shown that the distribution of the M site occupancy is strongly affected by the relative position of the two tetrahedra beneath them.
