Figure 1
Room-temperature crystal structures of (a) litharge (α-PbO) viewed roughly down the a axis (present study) and (b) massicot (β-PbO) viewed roughly down its c axis (Hill, 1985BB17). For both views, the crystal structure is presented as an atomic bond (left-hand side, with blue O atoms on the inside of the layers and magenta Pb atoms on the outside) and a polyhedron (right-hand side) diagram. The perspective in both cases has been chosen to highlight the gap between, and the `corrugation' of the planes of Pb and O atoms.
