Variations of spontaneous strains determined from lattice parameters given in Figure 3 of Wright et al. (2000  ) for a synthetic magnetite sample with Tv = 108 K. The original lattice parameters are reproduced in Fig. S11 and expressions for the strains are given in Table S4. Also included in (a) is the volume strain, ea, determined from lattice parameter data of Pachoud et al. (2020) for a synthetic magnetite crystal with estimated composition x = 0.0228 in Fe3–xZnxO4. (Pachoud et al. (2020) reported Tv = 92 K for this sample; the small discontinuity in ea deternined from their data is shown here as being at 88 K). The dashed line in (b) represents the first order discontinuity at ∼Tv. The solid line is a fit to data at T < Tv. |
