The panels show the complete water structure associated with (a) the T-state deoxyhemoglobin tetramer 2HHD (Fronticelli et al., 1994), (b) the R-state carboxyhemoglobin, 2HCO (Baldwin, 1980), and (c) the R2-state carboxyhemoglobin, 1BBB (Silva et al., 1992). In (d) the conserved solvent positions of all three states are shown associated with the R-state HbCO structure.
