Insertion devices (IDs). (a) The various types of insertion device. Most insertion devices present a periodic sinusoidal magnetic field. They are then called multipole `wigglers' or `undulators' depending on the so-called deflection (or magnetic field) parameter K; K = αγ = B0λ, where α is the maximum deflection angle; B0, the maximum field strength, is in T and λ is in m.
