A view from the L1 side of the 50S subunit. The L1 stalk is wrapped by the L9 protein, the N-terminal domain of which docks onto the L1 stalk directly. The long hydrophilic α-helix connecting the N- and the C-­terminal domains of L9 is seen here to be fully solvent exposed. On the right-hand side, fitting of the Bacillus stearothermophilus L9 protein (PDB code 1div) into the 3D density of the collar structure around the L1 stalk of the 7.5 Å E. coli 50S large ribosomal subunit cryo-EM reconstruction. The coordinates were fitted interactively into the C-terminal domain (lower domain) in the cryo-EM density using the program O (Jones et al., 1991BB61).
