The two alternative SAD phase diagrams are not fully symmetric, since they involve different contributions of the normal scatterers. When the anomalous and total phases are similar (as on the left side of the graph) the normal scatterers amplitude is smaller than when the difference between these two phases is close to 180°. This difference can be quantitatively described by the effect of the known partial structure (of the anomalous scatterers) on the probability distribution of the total protein phase.
