(a) The trajectory of correlation coefficients. After approximately 75 iterations, an initial solution [illustrated in (b); correlation coefficient 48.2%] is obtained. After ∼800 cycles a solution with a slightly higher correlation coefficient is found [48.3%; solution shown in (c)]. (b) An early solution in which two out of four hexamers have inverted handedness (grey and red versus blue and green). (c) Correct solution obtained from a later cycle of SHELXD. All hexamers have the same handedness. Only the contents of one crystallographic asymmetric unit (four hexamers) are shown.
