Typical results of heavy-atom soaking in the lipid mesophase. Crystals of CLLD DgkA in 9.9 MAG (a) and CM41 in 7.8 MAG (b) incubated with 0.7 mM Ta6Br12 (a green-coloured compound). The effectiveness of soaking is clearly visible by the green staining of the crystals. The crystals were soaked for 7 h followed by 2 h of back-soaking. The precipitant solution consisted of 8.3%(v/v) MPD, 2.4%(v/v) 1,4-butanediol, 100 mM NaCl, 100 mM LiNO3, 100 mM sodium citrate pH 5.6 in (a) and 5%(v/v) MPD, 100 mM NaCl, 60 mM magnesium acetate, 50 mM sodium citrate pH 5.6 in (b).
