(b) Close-up of the catalytic tunnel of a single Uhgb_MP protomer in the hexameric structure. The quaternary-structure assembly imposes structural constraints on active-site accessibility. The inorganic phosphate, the mannose and the N-acetylglucosamine molecules present in the catalytic site of protomer A are shown as sticks deeply buried in the catalytic site, which is accessible by a tunnel whose sides are formed by different protomers. The extremity of the tunnel is located at the centre of the plane formed by four Uhgb_MP molecules, in this case A, A′, B and B′.
