Figure 1
Experimental setup of SFX: pulsed liquid droplets containing microcrystals of lysozyme were ejected from a piezo-driven nozzle, to which a pulsed electric voltage was applied with an electric pulse generator. The droplets were introduced into a DAPHNIS chamber (not shown here), the inside of which was filled with He. The timing and the position of the pulsed-droplet nozzle was adjusted with a delay generator and a motorized stage. Synchronization with XFEL was monitored with a CCD camera, which visualized the droplet being shattered after it had been irradiated by the XFEL pulse.
