βHis97(FG4) supports the alkaline Bohr effect: βHis97(FG4) is located in the switch region of the α₁:β₂ interface. In T-state HuDeoxyHb (a, b), βHis97(FG4) is tightly positioned between αThr41(C6) and αPro44(CD2) and is doubly protonated. In R-state EqCNmetHb (c), βHis97(FG4) is loosely positioned between αThr38(C3) and αThr41(C6) and is singly protonated.
