The changing shape of a potential binding pocket in V-ATPase subunit C. Atomic surface representation of yeast V-ATPase subunit C in three states showing binding-site plasticity as the complex proceeds through its catalytic cycle (PDB entries 3j9t, 3j9u and 3j9v; Zhao et al., 2015BB60). The surface is coloured by electrostatic potential, with red and blue representing negative and positive charge, respectively, showing a large positively charged cavity being exposed in state 2. This cavity is not seen within the other states of the V-ATPase complex and may provide an opportunity to lock the catalytic cycle within the second state.
