The oxidation reactions catalyzed by Hmo and its Y128F mutant. (a) Hmo catalyzes a two-electron oxidation reaction to form benzoylformate from (S)-mandelate. (b) The Y128F mutant catalyzes a four-electron oxidative decarboxylation reaction from (S)-mandelate to benzoylformate and benzoic acid without freeing H2O2 during the reaction. (c) When benzoylformate is used as the substrate, the decarboxylated product benzoic acid cannot be formed by Hmo or its Y128F mutant in the presence or absence of H2O2.
