The bottom panel shows an NMR-derived model of the SARS-CoV-2 E protein (PDB entry 7k3g; Mandala et al., 2020BB51) in lateral (c) and end-on (d) views. Notice that the ion-channel-lining helices of the SARS-CoV E protein are more perpendicular to the membrane plane compared with those of the SARS-CoV E protein.
