The active site of (a) LfCE15C (with superposed XUX from PDB entry 6t0i) is compared with the active sites of (b) OtCE15A (PDB entry 6t0i) and (c) CuGE (PDB entry 6rv9) crystallized with XUX and XUXXr, respectively. Catalytic and substrate-interacting residues are shown as sticks and are colour-coded as in Fig. 1[link]. (d), (e) and (f) are the corresponding surface views, with binding residues in white. The binding pockets are emphasized by a dashed square. In other GEs there are larger residues in the corresponding position to Gly254 in LfCE15C, which in the latter creates a larger cavity that is capable of accommodating additional xylan decorations (Fig. 5[link]).
