The crystal structures of 3-furancarboxylic acid, C5H4O3, and both its calcium and strontium complexes, catena-poly[diaquacalcium-μ-(3-furancarboxylato-O,O':O)-μ-aqua 3-furancarboxylate], [Ca(C5H3O3)(H2O)3](C5H3O3), and catena-poly[diaquastrontium-μ-(3-furancarboxylato-O,O':O)-μ-aqua 3-furancarboxylate], [Sr(C5H3O3)(H2O)3](C5H3O3), respectively, are presented. The differences and similarities in the hydrogen-bonding schemes of the title acid and 2-furancarboxylic acid are discussed, and the importance of C—HO hydrogen bonds in the crystal packing of 3-furancarboxylic acid and its strontium and calcium complexes is highlighted.
