Four 9-alkylthiophenanthrenes, namely, 9-methylthiophenanthrene, C15H12S, (1), 9-ethylthiophenanthrene, C16H14S, (2), 9-propylthiophenanthrene, C17H16S, (3) and 9-butylthiophenanthrene, C18H18S, (4), have been characterized by X-ray analysis. Compound (1) crystallizes in space group P21 with two molecules, and the other three, in a novel display of isostructurality, in space group P21/c with one molecule in the asymmetric unit.
