Carboxylic acid derivatives of carbazole are of interest because of their useful applications in photoelectric and biological materials (Zhang et al., 2012; Kim et al., 2013). Organotin (IV) carboxylates comprises the class of tin complexes which has attracted particular attention due to their potential cytotoxicity and biocide activity, as well as their industrial and agricultural applications (Iqbal et al., 2013; Gielen et al., 2005; Tariq et al., 2013). Our recent efforts have focused on the aspects of synthesis and biological activity of new organotin(IV) complexes with different RCOOH (R = carbazole) as ligands because carbazole and its derivatives have shown pronounced cytotoxicity, anticancer and antimicrobial activity. In our previous work, we have reported a series of organotin complexes and systematically studied their optical properties (Sun et al., 2011). As a continuation of this work, we have synthesized 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octabutyl-7-((E)-2-cyano-3-{9-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]-9H-carbazol-3-yl}prop-2-enoyloxy)-4,8-dimethyl-2,4,6,8-tetroxa-1,3,5,7-tetrastannatricyclo[4.2.0.02,5]oct-3-yl (E)-2-cyano-3-{9-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]-9H-carbazol-3-yl}prop-2-enoate, (I), and its crystal structure is reported here.
To a benzene solution (30 ml) of (E)-2-cyano-3-{9-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]-9H-carbazol-3-yl}acrylic acid (HL) (0.146 g, 0.4 mmol), n-Bu2SnO (0.122 g, 0.4 mmol) was added under a nitrogen atmosphere. A clear solution formed which was refluxed overnight by using a Dean–Stark apparatus. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to afford a yellow solid. The crude product was dissolved in methylene chloride, methanol dispersion, to give a yellow solid (yield 78%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): 3.13 (s, 6H), 3.33 (t, 4H), 3.50 (t, 4H), 3.92 (t,4H), 4.64 (t, 4H), 7.33 (t,2H), 7.52 (t, 2H), 7.68 (d, 2H), 7.77 (d, 2H), 8.17 (d, 2H), 8.31 (d, 2H), 8.45 (s, 2H), 8.85(s, 2H).
Crystal data, data collection and structure refinement details are summarized in Table 1. The n-butyl chains and the oxygen chain were found to be rotationally disordered. This disorder was individually modeled in both cases with two orientations and relative occupancies of 7:1, 9:1 and 8:2, respectively, for the two parts. The C—C bond lengths of the n-butyl chains were restrained to 1.50 (1) Å. The Sn—C bond lengths were restrained to 2.10 (1) Å. The geometries of the three disordered parts were restrained to be similar. In the part of the oxygen chain, the bond lengths of C—C, C—O and N—C were restrained to 1.50 (1), 1.50 (1) and 1.50 (1) Å, respectively. The anisotropic displacement parameters of the disordered n-butyl chains and the oxygen chain groups in the direction of the bonds were restrained to be equal, with an s.u. value of 0.01 Å2. They were also restrained to have Uij components, with an s.u. value of 0.04 Å2. All H atoms were placed in calculated positions and treated as riding, with C—H = 0.93–0.97 Å and Uiso(H) = 1.2 or 1.5Ueq(parent C atom).
In the solid-state structure of the title compound, (I) (Fig. 1), the individual molecule lacks all symmetry elements. The SnIV atom is coordinated by three O atoms and two C atoms. For example, the O9—Sn1—O2 moiety has the appearance of the axis in a rough trigonal bipyramid, in which the equatorial positions are occupied by atoms C66 and C70, and atom O7, and the axial positions by atoms O9 and O2. The coordination polyhedron consisting of atoms Sn2 to Sn4 is more distorted towards square-pyramidal but can be described in the same general way. The major deformations originate from constraints imposed by the rigid four-membered Sn2O2 rings. The central Sn2O2 ring is coplanar, with dihedral angles of 0.68 (14)°. The molecule involves a dimer ladder structure by virtue of µ3-oxide bridges [Sn2—O7 = 2.049 (3) Å and Sn3—O8 = 2.044 (3) Å], which form the central R4Sn2O2 core (R = n-butyl). Atoms O7 and O8 of this unit are tridentate linking three Sn atoms, two central Sn2O2 rings (Sn2 and Sn3) and one peripheral Sn2O2 ring (Sn4 or Sn1). The additional links between the central and peripheral ring Sn atoms are provided by two bidentate O atoms from two deprotonated methanol molecules that form asymmetrical bridges [Sn3—O10 = 2.166 (3) Å and Sn4—O10 = 2.222 (3) Å]. Furthermore, each peripheral ring Sn atom (Sn1 or Sn4) is also coordinated by a monodentate (E)-2-cyano-3-{9-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl]-9H-carbazol-3-yl}prop-2-enoate ligand (L) ligand [Sn4—O11 = 2.151 (3) Å]. The Sn—O bond lengths are very similar (Table 2). The Sn4O4 core and the associated carbazole ligands can be considered as a fairly planar entity, with the pendant n-butyl ligands extending roughly perpendicular to this plane (Fig. 2). The molecule is not a centrosymmetric dimer. Inspection of the structure shows that the primary difference around the Sn4O4 core is the orientation of the n-butyl chains and the oxygen chain. The n-butyl chains are disordered over two sets of sites, with occupancy ratios of 0.738 (6):0.262 (6) (C43—C44—C45—C46), 0.131 (5):0.869 (5) (C47—C48—C49—C77) and 0.80 (3):0.20 (3) (C67—C68—C69—C70). The oxygen chain of the carbazole ligand is disordered over two sets of sites, with an occupancy ratio of 0.80 (6):0.20 (6).
A better understanding of the packing structure of (I) can be achieved through π–π stacking interactions and intramolecular interactions. The conformation of (I) is stabilized by intramolecular C—H···O hydrogen bonds [C···O = 2.798 (5)–3.544 (6) Å and H···O = 2.39–2.58 Å; Table 3]. The packing involves π–π stacking interactions between pairs of adjacent carbazole moieties (Fig. 3).

Geometry. All esds (except the esd in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell esds are taken into account individually in the estimation of esds in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between esds in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell esds is used for estimating esds involving l.s. planes. |
Refinement. Refinement of F2 against ALL reflections. The weighted R-factor wR and goodness of fit S are based on F2, conventional R-factors R are based on F, with F set to zero for negative F2. The threshold expression of F2 > σ(F2) is used only for calculating R-factors(gt) etc. and is not relevant to the choice of reflections for refinement. R-factors based on F2 are statistically about twice as large as those based on F, and R- factors based on ALL data will be even larger. |
