Composite picture illustrating the similarities and differences between the bulk structures of (a) ZrCl3, (b) PuBr3 and (c) UCl3 (Zachariasen, 1948BB40; Larsen et al., 1982BB19; Wells, 1984BB35; Schleid et al., 1987BB27). Bulk ZrCl3 consists of individual (MX6)n chains, while PuBr3 is a layered structure [i.e. the (MX6)n chains are connected within the xz plane] and UCl3 consists of a three-dimensional network [i.e. the (MX6)n chains are connected within both the xz plane and the xy plane] (with M = Zr, Pu, Br and X = Cl). In each case, the (MX6)n chains and their respective polyhedral geometries are highlighted via the addition of polyhedron faces.
