The scatter plots of the distances [{\rm P}_{i}\!-\!{\rm C}1'_{i}] versus [{\rm C}1'_{i}\!-\!{\rm P}_{i+1}] (blue) show a clear asymmetry allowing determination of the direction of the backbone chain. The brown points show the distances [{\rm P}_{i}\! - \!\bar{{\rm N}}_{i}] versus [\bar{{\rm N}}_{i}\!-\!{\rm P}_{i+1}] where [\bar{{\rm N}}] is N9 for purines and N1 for pyrimidines. The asymmetry is absent for these [\bar{{\rm N}}]-based data points.
