(a) gives the path difference from scattering out of the specular plane that results from an inclined plane; the path difference is indicated by the solid arrows in the projection given in (b). The beam paths of the maximum intensity for the incident angle ΩX projected on to the diffraction plane follow the dashed lines in (a) and (b), but the intensity of interest is at P.
