The left-hand side shows the matching that has to take place on the lower side of T. The right-hand side shows what happens if there is not an opposite match to T on the side containing v. This corresponds to the right-hand side of Fig. 11[link]. Chasing around the pairs of opposite matching triangles yields X,Y,Z and the latter is clearly totally mismatched with T.
