A cross section through the three-dimensional reconstruction of the local orientation, $[{\hat{\bf u}}^{\rm str}_{\theta{\rm op},\varphi{\rm op}}]$ , is shown for (a) a reconstruction without regularization and (b)–(f) with different values of the regularization parameter μ. The three-dimensional orientation of $[{\hat{\bf u}}^{\rm str}_{\theta{\rm op},\varphi{\rm op}}]$ was encoded through both hue and saturation, as indicated by the inset colour sphere.
