Glutathione molecules attached with their backbones perpendicular to the surface, as in (a), yield the diffraction patterns shown in (c) and (e) from grazing incidence, and a normal-incidence beam yields the pattern in (g). Similarly, glutathione molecules attached to a surface with their backbones parallel to the surface, as in (b), produce the diffraction patterns shown below: (d) and (f) from grazing incidence, and (h) from normal incidence. Note the patterns produced by normal incidence are quite distinct from those at grazing incidence.
