George M. Sheldrick and the diffractometer Quatermass (in the background), which was designed and built from components from many manufacturers to boost its functionality. George had a broad interest in science and occupied his bright mind with problem solving in structural chemistry. Possibly, he was a scientist from his birth in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. He was certainly a chess player before becoming a chemist.
