The mol­ecular structure of compound (I)[link]. It is located on a twofold rotation axis at (x, x, 0), and only atoms of the asymmetric unit are labeled. Atoms Cu1, N5, C8, C9 and N12 are located on this symmetry axis. The ellipsoids represent displacement parameters at the 50% probability level at 110 (2) K. Cu1 is further coordinated to a translation-related bipyridyl species. It is also approached by two symmetry-related formate anions at somewhat longer distances (Table 1[link]), generating a distorted octa­hedral coordination.
