The orientation of a peptide plane is intimately linked to the location in the Ramachandran plot of the two residues that are linked by it. Flipping the peptide plane between residues i and i+1 changes the ψ angle of residue i and the φ angle of residue i+1 by ~150–180°. If residue i has a negative φ value, an erroneous flip may not result in the residue becoming an outlier. However, if residue i+1 has a negative φ value, an erroneous flip will almost always result in the residue becoming an outlier. Hence, residues that have unusual φ, ψ values and are pep-flip outliers are often indicative of local main-chain errors. |
