The variable D-region (cyan) contains a shorter α-helix of ten residues in length, but is mostly composed of flexible loops. (b) Top view of the three molecules observed in the asymmetric unit of R20291 PilA1Δ1–34, showing potential pilin–pilin interfaces. (c) Analysis using PISA indicated a possible interface between R20291 PilA1Δ1–34 molecules via an Asp62–Lys96 salt bridge.
