The title samarium coordination polymer, [Sm3(C8H7O2)9]n, was obtained by the hydrothermal reaction of Sm(NO3)3 with 4-methylbenzoic acid in alkaline aqueous solution. In the there are three crystallographically independent SmIII ions, two of which are eight-coordinate in a distorted square-antiprismatic environment, while the third is nine-coordinate in a distorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic coordination. The metal centres are coordinated and bridged by four tridentate, three bidentate and two monodentate methylbenzoate anions, forming polymeric chains running parallel to the b axis.

A mixture of Sm(NO3)3 (0.5 mmol, 0.168 g), 4-methylbenzoic acid (0.5 mmol, 0.068 g), NaOH (0.5 mmol; 0.02 g) and H2O (12 ml) was placed in a 23 ml Teflon reactor, which was heated to 433 K for three days and then cooled to room temperature at a rate of 10 K h-1. The crystals obtained were washed with water and dryed in air.
Carbon-bound H atoms were placed at calculated positions and were treated as riding on the parent C atoms with C—H = 0.93–0.96 Å, and with Uiso(H) = 1.2 Ueq(C) or 1.5 Ueq(C) for methyl H atoms.

Geometry. All e.s.d.'s (except the e.s.d. in the dihedral angle between two l.s. planes) are estimated using the full covariance matrix. The cell e.s.d.'s are taken into account individually in the estimation of e.s.d.'s in distances, angles and torsion angles; correlations between e.s.d.'s in cell parameters are only used when they are defined by crystal symmetry. An approximate (isotropic) treatment of cell e.s.d.'s is used for estimating e.s.d.'s involving l.s. planes. |
Refinement. Refinement of F2 against ALL reflections. The weighted R-factor wR and goodness of fit S are based on F2, conventional R-factors R are based on F, with F set to zero for negative F2. The threshold expression of F2 > σ(F2) is used only for calculating R-factors(gt) etc. and is not relevant to the choice of reflections for refinement. R-factors based on F2 are statistically about twice as large as those based on F, and R- factors based on ALL data will be even larger. |

As a building block, 4-methylbenzoic acid is an excellent candidate for the construction of supramolecular complexes (Jin et al., 2001; Li et al., 2005). Recently, the title coordination polymer was obtained by the reaction of Eu(NO3)3 with 4-methylbenzoic acid in alkaline aqueous solution, and its crystal structure is reported here.
In the asymmetric unit of the title compound there are three crystallographically independent SmIII ions, two of which are eight-coordinate in a distorted square-antiprismatic environment while the third is nine-coordinate in a distorted tricapped trigonal prismatic coordination (Fig. 1). The Sm1···Sm2, Sm2···Sm3 and Sm1···Sm3i are 3.950 (2), 3.738 (4) and 3.907 (5) Å, respectively (symmetry code: i = 0.5-x, 0.5+y, 0.5-z). The metal centres are bridged by four tridentate, three bidentate and two monodentate methylbenzoato anions to forms polymeric chains running parallel to the b axis .
