An asterisk marks the highly conserved PLP-bound lysine and a black diamond marks the location of the catalytic tyrosine, while a black circle indicates the location of a residue which is often carbamylated in alanine racemases that have a lysine at this position. The purple box encloses the conserved PLP-binding motif containing the catalytic lysine. The red box indicates the region of electron density missing from monomer B of AlrAba.
