Average mismatch scores, M, in Å2 per polyhedron, for quartz. At each temperature, we are comparing one RMC configuration with another, where both configurations are fitted to the same data. The difference between the disorder Mbefore and the tetrahedral distortion Mafter is due to rigid-unit motion. Since the disorder is much greater than the distortion, the dynamic disorder in quartz is largely accounted for by rigid-unit motions of the tetrahedra.
