Diagram of the internal force gauge. In the design shown, the important dimensions governing the sensitivity of the force gauge are the active length (43 ± 0.5 mm), and the outer and inner diameters of the hollow steel column over the active length (9.52 mm and 2.5 mm, respectively). The force gauge was made from AISI D2 tool steel, vacuum hardened and tempered to Rockwell C54.
