(a) [|\sin \delta |] and (b) [\phi] as a function of the two external tilt angles [\Theta _{1}] and [\Theta _{2}] for a quartz plate with approximate orientation 45° to the [0001] direction and thickness 0.14 mm. The measurement was carried out at a wavelength of 600 nm and a total of 441 tilt angles were used. The complete set of measurements with the current set-up took 55 min. The azimuthal angle [\phi ^{\prime}] determining the position of the principal section PS′ is found to be equal to 51.1°. PS′ is denoted here by a thick white line.
