The central spot represents the main neutron beam. In (a) the horizontal and vertical lines would lie along the <110> directions for the high-Tc material YBa2Cu3O7 at high fields. In (b) these lines lie along the [100] and [010] directions for niobium with the magnetic field applied along the fourfold [001] direction.
