Comparison of the strains determined by neutron diffraction for seven representative α-Al2O3 reflections. In column (a), the data are compared with strains calculated using the Voigt (short dashes) and Reuss (long dashes) micromechanical models and the previously accepted elastic constants with s14 positive. In column (b), the same are compared with the sign of s14 reversed. Column (c) shows the best fit obtainable from linear combinations of the Voigt and Reuss calculations as shown in (b). Column (d) shows the improvement obtained by least-squares refinement of the numerical value of s13. Both (c) and (d) should be compared directly with the Reuss calculation (long dashes) in (b).
