Figure 7
(a) A representation of the molecular geometry of HMX in its β phase. (b) The thermal expansivity indicatrix viewed down the axis of NTE (i.e. for the x1 x2 plane). The negative-valued lobe of the expansivity indicatrix is small and projects from the centre of the expansivity indicatrix towards the viewer. (c) A representation of the crystal structure of β-HMX viewed in the same orientation as for the expansivity indicatrix in (b). A flattening of the central eight-membered C4N4 rings at higher temperatures causes an expansion in the [{\bf x}_{1}] and [{\bf x}_{2}] directions but a contraction in the [{\bf x}_{3}] direction (i.e. along the viewing direction).
