Polarized optical microscopy images (left column) and corresponding small-angle X-ray scattering data (right column) for HEX mesophases quenched to room temperature at the labeled cooling rates. The microscopy image widths are 500 µm. As expected, faster quenching yields smaller grains, in the micrometre range for this material. The scattering rings become correspondingly more homogeneous as more grains are probed in the scattering volume.
