(a) shows the usable detector offsets dmin and dmax from equations (6)[link] and (7)[link] for a given length of B for a fixed slit [S from equation (5)[link]], where the area between the curves of the same colour gives the range of d values to be used. (b) shows the same, but as deduced for variable slits. Dashed lines indicate the extension of our detector. A dotted line marks the position where the irradiated sample lengths are equal for both slit settings. The parameters used were L = 330 mm, [\alpha = 0.44]° and [S_0 = \infty] for the fixed-slit case and S = 12 mm in the case of variable slits.
