A plot of the calculated neutron detection efficiencies for the two different neutron detectors modeled in the text and with parameters given in Table 2[link] as a function of neutron wavelength λ0. The calculation is based on equation (16)[link]. Note that 2 mm of scintillator glass has much higher efficiency at thermal wavelengths than the 3He gas detector. The calculation probably overestimates the detection efficiency because discrimination of some valid events is likely owing to incomplete charge collection from the detector wall effect (Crane & Baker, 1991BB14).
