StarCluster running on a local laptop or workstation can be used to automatically build, manage and control clusters located in the cloud. Each instance belonging to a cluster is referred to as a node. Usually, StarCluster will interface directly with a `master node' which then controls the rest of the cluster, or `worker nodes'.
