Scheme of the HII phase model. The hexagonal lattice (left side) is defined by its lattice parameter a and the number of rings (lattice order) n. Its unit cell, shown in the center, is a regular hexagonal prism of length L and consists of a cylindrical water core, surrounded by lipids with their heads pointing toward the central water channel and a filler molecule occupying the interstices. We denote the axis of rotation by z. The unit cell is subdivided into areas of different SLD which depend on the molecular composition (see also Fig. 3). R0 denotes the position of the neutral plane at the center of the lipid backbone.
