X-ray measurement from a region [{\cal R}] in a grain experiencing a non-uniform vector field, [{\bf f}({\bf x}]), of strain and lattice orientation (illustrated by colour variation). The measured signal from [{\cal R}] is related to the integral over the intersected region [{\cal R}], which in general is different from the state at point [{\bf P}].
