(a) Packing diagram for hexaaquamanganese(II) bis­(4-styrene­sulfonate) (CSD refcode SUVBOA; Leonard et al., 1999BB28) viewed down [100], i.e. parallel to the triple layers. Cations are sandwiched between (001) layers of anions by means of hydrogen bonds between anions (acceptors) and cations (donors). No direct cation–cation hydrogen bonds are present. Adjacent layers show deeply interdigitated anionic groups. (b) Perpendicular view of a cationic layer with bridging anions (only top side ones are shown) producing the 2D network with widely spaced [100] rows available for interdigitation.
