Small-angle scattering by a spherical nanoparticle of radius R = 50 Å. The phase maps ϕθ(x, y, z) corresponding to q values of (a) 0.03 Å−1, (b) 0.09 Å−1 and (c) 0.12 Å−1 are represented in colour. For any value of q, the nanoparticle is mentally split into slices with uniform phases, and the resulting complex amplitudes are added (as in Fig. 6[link]). The resulting scattering pattern, given by equation (8[link]), is shown on the right.
