The interfaces between adjacent layers are located at x = li (i = 1, …, m − 1), the width of layer i is denoted as di = lili−1 and the diffusivity in layer i is denoted as Di. External boundary conditions apply at the ends of the slab (at x = l0 and x = lm) with internal boundary conditions defined at the interfaces (Carr & Turner, 2016BB7).
