Modes in (a) show a trend similar to the spontaneous strain, while the modes in (b) increase rapidly below the ferroelastic transition before plateauing. (c) Simplified schematic of the NbO6 (O in red and Nb in green) tilting patterns along the c direction as a result of the mode amplitudes, illustrating that the degree of tilting goes through a maximum at 275 K coinciding with the maximum in the spontaneous strain. The degree of tilting is exaggerated for visual effect.
