Stress–strain curve and REI evolution for the sand sample. Stress and strain are compressive, mimicking the compaction that sand is typically subjected to. The stress–strain curve does not exhibit the characteristics illustrated in Fig. 5[link] and Fig. 9[link]. The orange dots show the REI case where the sand reference state patterns were used as the training data set. The green dots show the REI case where the 304L-SS reference state patterns were used as the training data set. Both REI cases show minimal changes as the sand sample is subject to compressive loads up to catastrophic failure of the material system.
