(a) PYP crystals obtained on chip by counter diffusion using the simplest `upside-down chip in petri dish' setup. The arrows indicate the channel width (3 mm) and sides of the adhesive spacer. In the lower left corner, the PYP crystal damaged the 2.7 µm-thick COC window. The lighter area around the crystal is due to a dramatic reduction in protein concentration, demonstrating that the crystals are growing in the absence of convection. (b) An image of the PYP crystal mounted at the SSRL 12-1 beamline during diffraction measurements. The diffraction image in Fig. 5[link] was from this crystal. The bar highlighted by the arrow indicates the beam size of 5 × 40 µm.
