Swelling of an inverse hexagonal (HII) lipid phase. The chain-packing frustration increases as the diameter of the hexagonally packed cylindrical inverse micelles increases. This can be accommodated to a certain extent, but voids (shown in red) cannot be formed in the structure, thereby limiting the extent of pressure-induced swelling.
